  • Te Awa Kairangi (Grade 2) from the Akatarawa / Hutt River confluence to Totara Park Bridge
  • The Waiohine River (Grade 2) from Waiohine Gorge Road end to Devils Creek
  • Waiohine River (Grade 2) + helicopter access rafting from Totara Flats in the Tararua Ranges to Devils Creek.

About Wellington Rafting's Pioneer

Wellington Rafting was founded by Hamish Watters, following in the footsteps of the Legendary John Slater, father-in-law. After Hamish’s daughter was born, he moved back to Wellington and started investigating the surrounding rivers. Already with a passion for rafting and the desire to share these experiences with others, Hamish pioneered Wellington Rafting.

As a child, Hamish completed the first-ever Challenge For Change which is a mentoring programme set up to help youths who may be heading down a path of struggle. This triggered his love for nature, adventure and of course rafting. Wellington Rafting is his own way of giving back by creating opportunities for youths who find themselves in similar positions.

FLOW DEPENDENCE

The unique thing about the Tararua rivers is that they are flow-dependent. This means there needs to be recent rain to raise the water flow to a safe and enjoyable commercial level. Between April and December, inflatable duckie trips can usually be booked on any day. Between January and April, the rivers are too low to run any trips unless booked directly after heavy rainfall. As a commercial rafting company, we have high cut-off levels for whitewater rafting in our 8-person rafts to ensure the safety of our customers.

Add yourself to the company mailing list and become a flow hunter! You will receive notifications via email, letting you know when the rivers will be flowing and when you can jump on an epic adventure with Wellington Rafting.
